The Institutional Platform for Biodiversity and Wildlife Health (PIBSS Fiocruz) participated in the 61st Congress of the Brazilian Society of Tropical Medicine, held at the Ulysses Guimarães Convention Center in Brasília, from August 16 to 19, 2026, with the main theme: “Health in the tropics: an integrative vision from the perspective of the Global South”.
The participation of PIBSS Fiocruz stood out as a practice of collaboration and knowledge exchange, resulting from strategic partnerships with institutions such as the Ministry of Health, CNPq, the State University of Mato Grosso (Unemat), the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa Pantanal), Fiocruz Mato Grosso do Sul, and the Federal University of Viçosa (UFV).
These projects, developed in institutional partnerships, reflect the union of knowledge and practical experience. The application of the SISS-Geo Platform, through citizen science, and its use by society in general—including SUS professionals, environmental agencies, and others—contribute to the development of geospatial models through machine learning, which predict the favorability of yellow fever occurrence and support SUS.
In alignment with the scenario offered by Medtrop, focused on disseminating knowledge generated by the scientific community, PIBSS Fiocruz presented 7 works in e-poster format and 1 oral presentation given by the coordinator of PIBSS and founder of SISS-Geo, Marcia Chame, on “SISS-Geo SUS, a module of the Fiocruz Wildlife Health Information System (SISS-Geo), is intended for the health service to facilitate surveillance and integrate epizootic data in support of the prevention and control of zoonotic arboviruses and zoonoses”.
The presented works highlight the application of the SISS-Geo platform in Goiás to monitor epizootics, aiding surveillance; the SUS module of SISS-Geo that tracks yellow fever in primates in various regions of Brazil, providing essential data for decision-making; its use in modeling the circulation of the rabies virus in wild canids, prioritizing actions in risk areas in the Northeast; the surveillance of migratory birds contributing to the monitoring of arboviruses and zoonoses in Pantanal communities; studies on enteroparasites in indigenous communities aiming to promote public health measures; and finally, investigations into vaccinia virus exposure in domestic animals in indigenous villages, helping to understand and mitigate risks.
